I. TechnoServe Background information:
TechnoServe (TNS) is an international, non-profit economic development organization founded in 1968 out of a conviction that a vibrant private sector is an essential foundation for economic growth and poverty reduction. TechnoServe undertakes targeted, catalytic technical assistance and other programming to increase the competitiveness of entrepreneurs, businesses and industries that in-turn provide sustainable inclusion of the poor as producers, employees, entrepreneurs and sometimes consumers. A substantial portion of our work is in agriculture, enhancing farm productivity and commodity quality and addressing gaps in processing and other agribusiness capacities.
II. Program Description/The Partnership For Forest Program :
As the birthplace of coffee, coffee is key to Ethiopia’s culture and economy, contributing 5% of GDP and 30% of export earnings. An estimated 45% of the country’s total production comes from forest and semi-forest coffee. However, much of this coffee is currently sold as commercial-grade coffee, due to it being low quality. At the same time, the forests in which this coffee grows are under threat. Agricultural expansion and demand for fuel have led to the loss of one third of Ethiopia’s natural forest.
This project aims to incentivize the conservation of these forests by developing premium brands and supply chains for Ethiopian Forest Coffee.
The vision is to:
TechnoServe will specifically work on creating Forest Coffee Brands while other partners work on other parts of the value chain.
