Project Title: Ethiopia Connected Education COVID-19 Response
Project Contact: Joanna Zimmerman
Contract Value: TBD
BACKGROUND
The first confirmed COVID-19 case in Ethiopia was announced on March 13th, 2020. A few days later, the Prime Minister directed the closure of all schools and learning institutions in the country, affecting over 26 million students in all levels of education, including in refugee camps. COVID-19 has brought the educational system in Ethiopia to a halt and has worsened the situation of the most vulnerable children, especially refugees and host communities. School closures have affected over 200,000 refugee children in Ethiopia who have already experienced significant disruptions to their education due to conflict. This has an impact on the safety, well-being, and development of children. School closures have also influenced the educational attainment and holistic development of children. While schools have started to re-open as of January 2021, attendance remains limited. To address these issues, UNHCR will be supporting 37,500 refugee and host community children in Ethiopia over 12 months to access play-based learning during the COVID-19 crisis and beyond. This will be done through providing system support for educators and making Learning through Play (LtP) content available through digital and offline education resources, including the distribution of LtP kits at both home and in the school. The introduction of LtP content and resources, will aim to assist children in re-engaging with learning, while also accelerating their learning by embracing play at home. Play and learning are both integral components of this project, meeting the needs of refugees and marginalized children during the pandemic, and will lay the foundations for a planned future LEGO-UNHCR Foundation partnership.
