Background
Ethiopia continues to face the consequences of climate-induced shocks and inter-communal conflict and violence. A deteriorating drought situation leading to an increased food security situation (compromised access to markets, high food prices), increased movement of population, and weakened access to health and nutrition services are some of the factors that led to a deteriorating nutrition situation of most vulnerable people. It is estimated that in 2022 the ENCU/Nutrition Cluster partners will continue to have to deliver a large-scale emergency nutrition response. As per the 2022 HNO/HRP, it is estimated that over a 7.5million children under the age of five years, pregnant women, and lactating mothers will need nutrition interventions and assistance.
Ethiopia is a country where the Cluster approach is fully activated; the Nutrition Cluster is embedded in the EDRMC ENCU-Emergency Nutrition Coordination Unit, a member of the OCHA-led Inter-Cluster Coordination Group that informs the Ethiopian Humanitarian Country Team (EHCT) for decision making and provision of the humanitarian assistance in support of the Government of Ethiopia.
Data from rapid need assessments, surveys, and active screening is showing a deterioration of the situation and key analyses for rapid decision making are urgently needed. Toward ensuring a well-run Nutrition Cluster and effective emergency nutrition response, there is a need for coordination capacity and information management capacity, and this is as such formal accountability of UNICEF as the Cluster Lead Agency for Nutrition and forms a part of the agency's work.
