For the past 3 years, the Green Flower Foundation (GFF, https://greenflowerfoundation.org) has supported the creation of a class and a new curriculum (Organic Farming) in organic horticulture at the technical and vocational training center of Bishoftu (BPC).
The support has consisted of creating a large garden to fully experiment with organic horticulture at all levels, offering the professors specific courses in organic farming, organizing internships in organic farms for the students, offering English classes, and support and guidance with their business plans for their upcoming professional lives.
Special sessions with entrepreneurs from Addis were set up which prepared the students to move into the managerial sides of their future business.
In addition, special ad hoc projects were realized, such as an introduction to apiculture with tailor-made support for the students, the establishment of a field for organic seed production, and the development of a network and means to sell the high-quality vegetables in Addis Ababa.
At the end of last year, 36 students graduated from BPC. They are now eligible to receive a 3-year entrepreneurial support program. This new program (GO Organic) will provide training and advice to the graduates willing to establish a business in the organic field. The challenges for these young entrepreneurs are huge and the environment is not particularly favorable for rapid success.
The organic expert act as a general advisor to the entrepreneurs supported and to the Farm coordinator of GFF, to help the management of the gardens GFF has.
