1. About TechnoServe
TechnoServe works with enterprising people in the developing world to build competitive farms, businesses and industries. Founded in 1968, we are a nonprofit organization that develops business solutions to poverty by linking people to information, capital and markets. Our work is rooted in the idea that given the opportunity, hardworking men and women in even the poorest places can generate income, jobs and wealth for their families and communities. In East Africa, we operate in Ethiopia, Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania, and Uganda. Across the region, we implement a range of large-scale market systems interventions, agribusiness programs and entrepreneurship/economic empowerment projects. With more than fifty years of proven results, we believe in the power of private enterprise to transform lives.
2. About the Project
The primary objective of the project will be to increase production of the coffee trees for coffee farmers through both yield improvement and behavioral shifts due to price incentives. This production improvement will be achieved through educating project farmers on agronomy and environmental best practices, farm management, and assisting them in applying those techniques at an individual farm level.
We are working to develop a sustainable system for smallholder honey farming and implementing Honey Farm College—a smallholder training program focused on sustainable backyard beekeeping practices to increase their quality and yields.
Smallholder coffee farmers rehabilitate their farms with appropriate incentives, apply climate-smart agricultural practices, and adopt honey production activities; and coffee washing stations improve the quality of their processing and business operations, then the production of higher-value specialty coffee and honey will increase, leading to higher, sustained incomes for farmers and coffee processing enterprises.
Honey Farm College Business Advisors (BAs) are responsible for setting up, implementing and improving Honey Farm College training and overall implementation activities.
Honey Farm College BAs are responsible for supervising up to 10 Farmer Trainers, developing and managing work plans and observing and evaluating delivery of trainings to beekeepers who are also coffee farmers. They will manage day-to-day communications and overall relationships with local government stakeholders.
