Background
Wetlands International (WI) is a Dutch-based conservation NGO dedicated to safeguarding and restoring wetlands for people and nature. WI through its Ethiopian Office is currently implementing various projects aimed at safeguarding and restoration of wetlands in different parts of the country such as in the Central Rift Valley Sub-Basin (CRVB). The WASH SDG project aims to contribute towards increased access to availability and sustainable management of water and sanitation for all (SDG6) for rural communities in the intervention area. The aim is mainly achieved through WASH facility provision, improving behavioural changes, and strengthening WASH governance and the institutional framework of the target community. Despite these WI is concerned about the water quality status
Water pollution is a rapidly growing concern in Ethiopia, particularly in areas where rivers, lakes, and other surface water bodies are situated around major towns, industrial areas, and agricultural fields. Not only surface water but also groundwater quality is also deteriorating from time to time. This is also the case for the CRVB. In the CRVB/Zeway Shalla Sub-basin, earlier rapid assessments indicate deterioration of water quality due to anthropogenic activities such as the discharge of industrial effluents, agricultural chemical runoff (fertilizers, pesticides), untreated sewages and etc. The deterioration of the water quality puts pressure on public and environmental health, water security and the overall socio-economic development over the sub-basin. Further water pollution is one of the issues identified by CR WASH platforms to be investigated in the sub-basin. In order to reduce such pressures, it is important to bring various stakeholders including researchers and decision makers into CR WASH platform to create better collaboration and coordination and take remedial actions for the water quality issues. Therefore, WI Ethiopia would like to invite researchers who have recent research results related to water pollution in the Zeway Shala Sub-basin to submit their papers based on the below-listed criteria.
