Job Description

Background

This ToR is a call for Expressions of Interest from the Ethiopian joint response project funded by the Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA) which has been led by SOS Children’s Villages (SOS CV) since January 2022.

The Dutch Relief Alliance (DRA) was formed by a group of Dutch humanitarian organizations that work in partnership with the Netherlands’ Ministry of Foreign Affairs. The DRA has been collaborating with over 100 local organizations around the world since 2015. The DRA works on the ground to deliver equitable humanitarian aid: life-saving assistance based on solid humanitarian response plans and best practices. Over the years, the DRA has provided humanitarian aid to more than 4 million people in 22 crises. The 14 members of the DRA work together in closely coordinated joint responses across the world and started several Acute Crisis Joint Responses (of 6 months each) in Ethiopia such as the Desert Locust, COVID-19, Tigray, and Drought Joint Responses while working a Protracted Crisis Joint Response for Ethiopia in 2022 in Oromia, Amhara, and Tigray Regions with 6 DRA members and 6 local NGOs.

The exercise of digital data collection and analysis remains an indispensable role in capturing quality evidence that then translates to rich data analysis and findings. With different organizations, programs, and projects of today, digital data collection regularly to evaluate and monitor progress and performance, quality and advanced data collection skills are more needed than ever to ensure that data gathered is both relevant, timely, and accurate. This is important in guaranteeing that subsequent decisions based on the embodied findings are valid.

Digital Data Collection using ODK/Kobo Toolbox has been acknowledged worldwide by researchers, non-governmental organizations, and relief agencies as very useful and convenient data collection method - substituting previously used paper-based data collection methods.

Thus, this training will provide the Ethiopian joint response implementing partner with the ability to apply the right skills and resources required for digital data collection system, data analysis and visualization.

Objectives of the consultancy

Preparation, delivery, and reporting on basics of digital data collection, analysis, and visualization mainly designing a survey on the Kobo toolbox for MEAL staff members in Addis Ababa.

Scope

The main scope of the assignment is providing training on Digital data collection, analysis, visualization via kobo toolbox/ODK for Meal staff members in Addis Ababa.

Digital data collection, analysis and visualization training for three days

• Introduce the participants to digital data collection, analysis, visualization to practical basis for humanitarian response.
• Familiarize training participants with the Kobo toolbox, ODK and PowerBI
• Simulation exercise how to collect, analysis, deploy, synchronize, import and export on kobo tool box/ODK and
• How to produce report on kobo tool box/ODK  

Key Deliverables/Outputs

For the delivery of course:

Below are the expected deliverables by the consultant:

• Deliver three-day training on Kobo toolbox/ODK and PowerBI
• Ensure the participants are able to use KOBO/ODK independently by the end of the training.
• Provide a copy of the training materials
• Evaluation feedback and training report inputs: Written feedback and recommendations to inform a brief training report;

Responsibilities of the Contractor

• The contractor will approve the work plan submitted by the consultant after their review and possible changes and edits of the consultant;
• Training venues will be selected and booked by the contractor;
• The contractor will contact and inform participants about the purpose and objective, location and dates of the training;
• The contractor will provide all the necessary information or documents as demanded by the consultant that are related to the work;
• Consultancy fees will be transferred based on the agreement signed with the consultant.

Participants

As defined in the course description, specifically, these will be MEAL Staff members mid-high level, who are part of the Ethiopia Joint Response 2022-2023

Job Requirement

Essential profile of the consultants:

For this piece of work, SOS CVE is looking for the following expertise:

• Track-record of previous high-quality assessments, facilitations and trainings on Kobo Toolbox, ODK using participatory approaches particular in the areas of humanitarian interventions.
• Have a minimum of a BA degree in the fields of Social Sciences, database, M&E, IT, Statistics, Economics, Development studies, humanitarian studies or any other related fields and have more than three years of practical experience in using, providing training using this software and others.
• Know how to undertake rapid assessments, qualitative and quantitative data collection and analysis via KOBO/ODK.
• Have solid understanding of the situation of the country, local context and the ongoing changes.
• Excellent communication skills (written and oral) in English and Arabic/local language. 
• Excellent practical and theoretical knowledge of Kobo Tool Box Programming, mapping, questionnaire design etc.
• Strong interactive facilitation skills and an adaptive, dynamic instructional approach to ensure learning remains tailored to evolving discussions and questions.
• Substantial knowledge and experience in capacity building: adult learning methodological approaches and tools and strong skills in facilitation; designing trainings; collecting and analysing secondary information; conducting surveys, consultations, and key informant interviews; synthesising qualitative and quantitative information; and evaluating training impact.
• The ability to communicate technical subject matter (in oral and written form) to people with varying technical knowledge/skills and from different educational and cultural backgrounds.
