Project Overview
The Luminos Fund (www.luminosfund.org) provides transformative education programs to thousands of out-of-school children, supporting them to catch up to grade level, reintegrate into government schools, and prepare for lifelong learning. In Ethiopia, Luminos is actively supporting the Ethiopian government to implement and scale an accelerated learning program modeled on the joyful and student-centered Luminos Method. With the endorsement of the Sidama Education Bureau, Luminos has been working to refine the curriculum and pedagogy of the current government model, known as the Accelerated Learning Program (ALP), to increase the focus on foundational literacy and numeracy and make the model easier to scale. As part of this work, Luminos developed the “ALP Playbook” – a set of teaching and learning materials to support ALP teachers with the scope and sequence of the condensed ALP curriculum. The Playbook consists of an annual plan, set of Minimum Learning Competencies, lesson planning template, and a detailed weekly Lesson Guide that teachers can use to enrich their lesson plans with activity-based learning techniques. Luminos is currently piloting the ALP Playbook in 40 classrooms in Sidama, reaching 1,500 students. Now, in preparation for the 2023/24 school year, we are working to refine the Playbook based on key learnings from this school year.
