Scope of Work & Deliverables
The gender and social inclusion analysis and climate resilient sustainable livelihood will apply the intersectional analysis. The assessment is expected to identify the constraints and opportunities faced by diverse groups of women and men across the coffee value chain (household level, farm level, wet mills, and local level exporters). The assessment will also identify barriers and entry points for working with wet mills and industry actors to facilitate equal opportunities for diverse groups of women and men to participate and economically benefit from the coffee sector. Moreover, the assessment is expected to assess the existing livelihood opportunities and constraints disaggregated by diverse social groups (age, marital status, disability, wealth status, social status, etc) and find out feasible alternative livelihood options for diverse groups of men and women. Then, the consultant is expected to propose solutions/recommendations to ensure gender equality and women economic empowerment throughout the coffee value chain and design Climate resilient sustainable livelihood alternatives for both women and men coffee farmers.
The assessment will be undertaken in five (Dilla Zuria, Kochere, Wonago, Yirgachefe and Gedeb) woredas of Gedeo Zone of SNNP.
Key stakeholders include, but are not limited to:
Ø Women and men coffee farmers (youth and adult);
Ø Wet-mill workers, managers and leaders (women and men);
Ø Industry actors, e.g Ethiopian Women in Coffee Association;
Ø Women’s Rights Organizations and Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) working in the area working to support women’s rights, gender issues and other related topics;
Ø Financial service providers including cooperatives;
Ø Government agencies including the Ethiopia Coffee and Tea Authority (ECTA), Women and Social Affairs Bureau, Labor and Skills Bureau, cooperative promotion office and agriculture office.
The analysis and climate resilient sustainable livelihood assessment will aim to answer the following questions on the constraints and needs of diverse groups of women and men (especially considering, age, social status, wealth status, asset endowment, disability, etc.) based on analysis of secondary and primary data:
A competitive bid for the contractor (individual and/or team) role will demonstrate:
● Bachelor’s degree in gender & development, rural development, economics, or other relevant field with at least 8 years of professional experience in development, economics, or other relevant field, or Master’s degree with at least 5 years of experience
● Previous experience in the field of women’s economic empowerment, specifically in relation to agriculture (especially coffee), livelihood assessments, market systems development, and private sector-focused programs
● Demonstrated research and analytical skills on issues related to gender mainstreaming, women’s economic empowerment, rural development, and agricultural value chains
● Previous experience in developing programmatic documents for governments, international organizations, or civil society organizations on women’s economic empowerment
● Ability to facilitate and relate to stakeholders at multiple levels
● Sensitivity to cultural/historical context in the data collection process
● Proven ability to work within limited time constraints in the preparation of high-quality documents
● Proficiency in Amharic and English required
