Job Description

Background

Johns Hopkins Center for Communication Programs (CCP) implements Social and Behavior Change (SBC) component of the USAID-Integrated Youth Activity (IYA) project in collaboration with other consortium members. The purpose of IYA project is to empower Ethiopian youth to increase their economic opportunities, create self-reliant organizations, improve their voice in local, regional, and national policy dialogue, and expand access to essential services. The IYA SBC activities cover multiple issues including civic engagement, education, health, economic development, peace and security, and others. The program design utilizes media campaigns, youth and community engagement activities, capacity strengthening, and leveraging technology to provide access to information and services for youth.

Overview of the Role

The interns in the development, implementation, and monitoring of the IYA SBC activities to promote positive behavior changes among youth and the wider community.

Specific Roles and Responsibilities

• Provide support in the implementation of SBC activities ensuring high quality and timely delivery in the implementation cities.
• Collaborating with the team to design evidence-based interventions that aim to change specific behaviors or attitudes. This may include organizing community events or implementing communication campaigns.
• Distributing materials and tools including print, audio, video, and other SBC tools to CSOs while ensuring the maintenance of proper documentation.
• Support, track, and ensure that all communication materials are disseminated according to plan reaching intended audiences and Kefeta service delivery points.
• Assist CSOs in Youth Mobilization, Community Kick-off and Kefeta talk activities in planning, implementing, and documentation.
• Facilitate communication with the CSOs and central SBC team.
• Work with CCP’s media team to ensure that media outputs address relevant youth issues and are produced and transmitted properly.
• Provide input in the contextualization and development of SBC materials in the local language.
• Support the design and execution of SBC capacity-strengthening initiatives under the IYA.
• Organize onsite supportive supervision to oversee proper implementation of SBC interventions, generate reports with timely and appropriate follow up on action points for all IYA service corners related to SBC activities.
• Represent the Kefeta SBC team on the cluster office consortium in different meetings, workshops, and events as required.
• Document Kefeta SBC intervention success stories in the assigned city.
• Monitor the progress of SBC interventions and assist the M&E team in the collection of data related to social behaviors, attitudes, and beliefs. This may involve conducting surveys, interviews, or literature reviews to gather relevant information.
• Working closely with various stakeholders, including community members, partner organizations, and government agencies to ensure effective collaboration and coordination of efforts. This may involve attending meetings, facilitating workshops, or participating in community outreach activities.
• Maintaining accurate records of activities, including data collected, interventions implemented, and outcomes achieved.
• Assist in the preparation of reports and presentations to communicate findings and recommendations to stakeholders.
• Staying updated on the latest research, theories, and best practices related to social behavior change. Actively seeking opportunities for professional development and growth in the field.
• Timely submit reports to central Kefeta SBC team
• Undertake other duties as may be assigned by the Kefeta SBC program specialist.

Reports To:  IYA SBC Specialist 

Required interns: 7 (seven) – (one for the stated places)

Duration of Employment: 6 months            

Job Requirement

Desired Qualifications and Attributes

• Currently pursuing or recently completed a degree in a relevant field (e.g., social sciences, public health, and communication).
• Experience working with adolescents and youth.
• Proficiency in English and Amharic, and knowledge of local language Ethiopian languages are mandatory.
• Knowledge of behavior change theories and techniques is a plus.
• Ability to work independently and as part of a team, with strong organizational and time management skills.
• Proficiency in using computer software and tools for data analysis and presentation (e.g., Microsoft Office).
• Familiarity with social media platforms and digital communication tools is a plus.
• A passion for social change and a commitment to promoting positive behaviors and attitudes within communities.
