Introduction
Women’s Hope International is a Swiss based non-governmental organization committed to the improvement of sexual and reproductive health and rights in Ethiopia, Afghanistan, Bangladesh, and Chad. Its mission is to ensure that women and girls, regardless of their origin, wealth, or religion, can lead healthy and self-determined lives.
Women’s Hope International works through strategic partners to bridge the gap between the demand for health services and the supply of quality health services by supporting community and facility level intervention programs. In short, it works towards improving the health systems of the country in partnership with key organizations and stakeholders.
The organization values the critical role of local actors and strives to empower them through different strategies of which provision of financial and technical support to lead their own development agenda. In line with this, the organization delivers its program and projects through carefully selected local implementing partners.
Background Information
One of the implementing partners of Women’s Hope International is Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia. HFE runs a Rehabilitation and Reintegration Centre named Desta Mender, or ‘Joy Village,’ to address the psychosocial and economic needs of fistula survivors. Desta Mender serves as a recovery center where longer-term fistula patients with more severe injuries can continue to heal, while also providing empowerment through training and psycho-social support for those in need. Located in Oromia Regional State, Burayu City, Desta Mender is approximately 17 km west of Addis Ababa.
In 2020, Hamlin Fistula Ethiopia (HFE) and Women’s Hope International entered into a project agreement. The joint project is titled, ‘Empowering women with childbirth injuries through life-skill and vocational training at Desta-Mender in HFE, 2020- 2024’. The project is aimed at translating the notion of holistic care into practice to restore the overall wellbeing of fistula survivors. Specifically, it is to provide more former fistula patients with the chance to develop essential skills at Desta Mender. The project targeted 1632 direct beneficiaries and 8160 indirect beneficiaries. The total agreed budget is around CHF 329,176. The expected project outcomes are:
Outcome 1- To improve the health and psychological conditions of Women with Childbirth Injuries and resume an active social life that enables them to participate in their home, in their community, and the wider society (individual empowerment).
Outcome 2- To promote enabling environment and inclusion within the family/neighbourhood (enabling environment).
Outcome 3- To capacitate women with childbirth injuries to generate their income (individual empowerment/demand & capacity development).
Outcome 4- To facilitate an enabling environment for women with childbirth injuries through the support of relevant stakeholders. (system/supply & enabling environment initiatives).
As the project period nears its conclusion, it is essential to measure the outcome and impact of the project in the lives of the ultimate beneficiaries and its multiplier effect on their families and the wider community through an end line project evaluation, which also incorporates a beneficiary tracer study. Moreover, the evaluation is expected to assess the HFE's project management capability, including the overall leadership and management approach, as these are key parameters for the effective and efficient delivery of a project/program.
Therefore, we commissioned this end line project evaluation to be done by external organization with the belief that it would be mutually beneficial process which provides both the donor (Women’s Hope Int.) and the implementing partner (Hamlin Fistula Hospital) with the necessary information to make informed decisions that ultimately helps to strengthen future projects/programmes.
