Background Information
Voluntary Service Overseas (VSO) is an international development charity with a vision for a "world without poverty" and a mission to "bring people together to fight poverty”. VSO recruits professionals to work as volunteers, living and working alongside local populations in developing countries. Founded in 1958, VSO has sent over 50,000 volunteers to over 140 developing countries. As of 2014 VSO currently works in 35 countries in Africa, Asia and the Pacific.
Voluntary Service Overseas-Ethiopia (VSO-E) since 2009 has been implementing health program focusing on three key programmatic components where, Improving the quality of and access to Maternal, Newborn, and Child Health (MNCH) services is one of the programmatic components.
The health of mothers and children is central to global and national concerns. Although most pregnancies and births are uneventful, approximately 15% of all pregnant women develop a potentially life-threatening complication that calls for skilled care and some will re quire a major obstetrical intervention to survive. Each time a woman becomes pregnant, she runs the risk of maternal death again, and the risk adds up over her lifetime. In developing countries, where both mortality and fertility tend to be high, the lifetime risk of maternal death can be astoundingly high.
in cognizant of this fact, VSO-E has been carrying out various capacity development activities to improve the knowledge and skill of health professionals. This consultancy call is also targeted to improve the skills of midwives through three days refresher training on very specific topics.
